Ok, well after only 45 minutes of thrashing around on a actual blog site. Finally starting.
Speaking of finally starting… 7 days ago I started my god knows how many numbered to lose weight and get in shape.resolution, pledge, promise
As I told one of my counselors (yes I have 2) earlier this week. About six months ago I reached down to pet Ripley (7 yr old female lab mix) and ran my hand over her rib cage. The rule is if you can’t feel their ribs doing this you dog is over weight. I was shocked at this realization and immediately stopped extra treats and put a measuring bowl cup in Ripley’s food holder.
I did it because I didn’t want Ripleys health or comfort compromised by being overweight. I wasn’t mad at her or thought any less of her. It was what she needed. Six months later can feel Ripley’s ribs and she’s running around just as crazy as ever.
As I told my counselor if I can do that for my dog why can’t I do that for myself?
So a week ago I decided I’m not eating another meal until I heard/felt my stomach rumbling. It would stop auto or time based eating (both of which I did a lot of) It took almost 24 hours before rumbling started. Kept thinking I’m still not hungry, really?
Yes, really.
So its been a week and I’m doing pretty good. Surprisingly, not stressed.
So about eight to ten months I did three things that made making the decision and then following through a lot easier. 1. Stopped drinking soda. 2. Stopped drinking coffee mostly. 3. Started drinking water ever day.
My former employer Amazon really helped me with the drinking water consistently thing. Amazon provided electrolyte powders to use in water bottles and had a ton of water coolers around everywhere so going to get water was easy. So gold stars to Amazon for that.
In same conversation with counselor I remarked was trying to get off the “I hate myself” train and into the “neutral/acceptance” car. Neutrality is downright gorgeous territory compared to the “I hate myself”
Neutrality allows for missteps and makes recovering from them easier. Trust me I have a lot of experience with missteps.
Another thing I’ve done is pretty much get rid of all the junk food crap in my house. Done an effective enough job that I’ve had to make a 7-11 run for a chocolate bar. Hey, better one chocolate bar than two or three at once. Yes, I’ve done it, No, I’m not proud of it. Its part of the reason I am where I am.
The other semi-big thing I did about eight to ten months ago was start taking anti-anxiety prescription. I know I was anxious bud didn’t realize HOW anxious I was.
Two other big thing that happened about six months ago was my roommate and best friend died after a 3 1/2 year battle with multiple melanoma. He died one week after stopping treatment and going on hospice.
Because of my roommates death I quit Amazon and not in a way I’m particularly proud of. When my rooommate started on hospice and then had a rapid precipitous decline I put in a request for a LOA and just didn’t go in or call for my scheduled shifts.
Eventually Amazon said No to my request for an LOA and I just never went back or called. In my defense I had a few things going on to deal with but it wasn’t a good way to leave. Am I ashamed? No. Amazon didn’t call me either; so we’re even in the rude department.
I’ve learned grief is different for everybody and for everyone you lose. My roommate was my best friend so losing him was a dual hit.
John and I shared a love of movies and movie lines. One in particular from “The Shawshank Redemption” was “get busy livin or get busy dying”. I’m tring to do the former in this get in shape pledge.
Due to my age, size, shape and pockmarked job history me getting fully employed is not likely. So I decided you’re not working and you’ve got enough money to get through at least the next six months.
Tackling the get in shape promise, pledge opportunity has become my focus. I haven’t been moving much (though I did get three crochet afghans done that I’m proud of).
I’m starting at ground zero, well actually below ground zero, I got winded and sore from mowing lawn and taking care of lawn debris over the past week.
So I’m looking at really starting now. I’ve had a really good week in the food department and am counting the yard work as exercise.
So, I’m going to focus on getting in shape and I started this evening with evening by walking to Wal-Mart. It’s a total of five blocks.
So on Day 7 – Walked 5 blocks
